Coaching Philosophy

We want to make our players better people, not just better basketball players. We want them to develop confidence in their own abilities; as players definitely, but also as table officials, coaches, referees and citizens. If we win cups and trophies along the way (and we do!), that's an excuse for a celebration. We keep our squads small and the coach to player ratio high, in order that players get the best possible attention.
The most important thing for the club is that our players reach the peak of their potential, wherever that peak may be. At the absolute pinnacle of playing achievement we have had six junior members become either England or Wales internationals while still with the Bulldogs and have provided the platform for three others to achieve national representative honours as players or coaches.

Our journey through Covid-19

Covid-19 imposed restrictions on our ability to deliver basketball from March 2020, when we were catering for over 100 players per week in 10 hours of sessions at three venues. During the summer of 2020 we ran outdoor sessions, first in small groups complying with guidance such as "the rule of six", then as proper sessions complying with guidance on numbers and families mixing in public spaces. We didn't move indoors until October 2020, as all three of our old venues didn't reopen to us. Thankfully South Wirral High School have welcomed us "back" (it was our second home venue, from 1996-99).

In 2021 government guidance changed regularly, which cascaded to the guidance that we receive from BasketballEngland. Under the UK Government's Step 3, introduced in May 2021, we were still measuring temperatures, ensuring track & trace by use of an app for all participants, cleaning balls regularly during training and applying numbers restrictions to our sessions. Our coaches and Covid volunteers were all wearing masks, as we focused on player and coach safety. Then we had fun playing 'ball!

Through all of this, we built numbers and slowly expanded the numbers of sessions available at South Wirral High School. In mid-2022 we are offering seven sessions on four days over 11 1/2 hours, our membership (not just attendance) is approaching 100, which means we are close to capacity for our current coaching team.

As many people are finding us via our website, we don't have to advertise at the moment.
